When I was a kid, holidays were SO exciting, especially Christmas. I can remember trying to stay up late to "catch" Santa, waking up so early to go through my stocking, eating cookies for breakfast, and claiming my place in the living room for any presents I got. Then I grew up and Christmas was as exciting as it could be, but it definitely isn't the same as when you're a kid. Now that I have kids, that excitement has come back. Charlotte is at the age where she gets it now. She gets that a big special day is coming. She really knows about presents and she loves new toys and books. When I took out the Christmas boxes, she was so happy to "make Christmas." And then the other day, she got Elf on the Shelf. I was so excited about it! If you're not sure what in the world I'm talking about - it's basically a little elf that you sit somewhere in your house and his job is to watch your kids, go back to the North Pole to report to Santa, and then come back by morning to watch you again. -I was telling some friends about it today and they were asking if he was creepy, and I get how it could sound that way, but he comes with a book that explains him and how elves and Santa works, so it isn't really that creepy. But I wouldn't be surprised if some kids did get freaked out by him!-
Yesterday was her first day with the elf (whom she'd like to name Elf) and he sat above our fireplace. I guess she had a really good day (so I was told) but when I came home, the attitude turned on. (That's a whole other story). We were talking all about the elf. About how he's watching her and how she can't touch him and how he's going to report to Santa. And, if you have read previous blogs you know that I have been "threatening" Charlotte with Santa for months so his power might not be as strong as it might if this just started now. Anyway, she started acting up again, shouting NO at me like she has been doing, and I said, "you better behave because the elf is watching you." She thought for a second, turned and looked at me, and said, "NO Mommy, I am watching the elf," while she stood there staring at him for a few seconds. Man are we going to have a hard time with her - at 2 1/2 she's already that clever and defiant!
