I did something...

If you've been reading these blogs, or if you know Charlotte, you know...she's trouble. She's wonderful and hilarious and every other fabulous word I can think of - but...she is also a lot of trouble. She LOVES Curious George - which is sort of a problem because he is just a handful and she seems to copy him. She is so, SO curious, but she is also a planner. She doesn't just notice something and go check out what it is. She waits. She thinks. She plans her trouble.

She can be fully focused on coloring or watching Curious George or transporting something from one of her bags to another and you can think she is not even paying attention to you. Sometimes I try talking to her, but she is so into what she is doing that she barely responds to you. I can get a mumbled "okay, Mommy" out of her. And then, you leave the room and she puts her plan into action. Generally, I leave the room because I have to put Jack to bed or take care of something for him. I don't like to leave her alone (because she's trouble!), but there are times when I have no choice...and she knows it. I have walked out of the room before just to see what she does and it is amazing. She will not even look up from her activity, even when you have told her you are leaving the room. She listens for your footsteps and when she can't hear them anymore, she jumps and does whatever it is she's been planning for the day. Sometimes it is to climb up and get some piece of food she spotted earlier in the pantry. The other day it was to reach into the drawer and get out the bag of birthday candles. She always loves, and just waits for the moment, to push the button on the receiver of her monitor so that it changes the channel and it starts to beep. It drives us crazy. After she does it and you walk back into the room, she turns, and gives you that look and says "I did something..." You can't always figure out what it is right away but you eventually find it!

Tonight, while I was upstairs putting my precious little man (who only laughs and smiles and cuddles - and isn't trouble yet!) to bed, I hear one of Charlotte's plans being put into action. She is outside his room making an attempt to transport her laundry from where it was to wherever she has decided it needed to be. I have gotten much quicker about checking on her when I hear either an unknown noise or not enough noise. I rush to his bedroom door to see what she is doing. She freezes and gives me a look. I give her a look right back, tell her to not move everything, and then she gives me the most priceless response. She says, "I need to Mommy, please try to understand." And the thing is - I think she genuinely meant it. She can't help but "do something"...and I wouldn't have her any other way!
